BAGUIO CITY — Congressional candidate Gladys Vergara brought her campaign to the streets on Thursday, visiting multiple public utility jeepney (PUJ) terminals across the city to connect personally with drivers and commuters. The initiative, marked by genuine interactions and open dialogue, highlighted her commitment to inclusive governance and pro-people policies.
Vergara was accompanied by Wilson Bumay-et, President of the Federation of Jeepney Operators and Board Member of the Baguio Transport Cooperative (BTC), along with federation officers and city council aspirant Eric Kelly. Together, the team went terminal to terminal, greeting drivers, distributing campaign materials, and engaging in meaningful conversations.
Known for her approachable leadership style, Vergara made it a point to ask for each driver’s permission before placing campaign stickers on their vehicles—earning not only smiles but also trust.
“What we’re doing today isn’t just about visibility,” Vergara said. “It’s about being present, listening, and standing alongside those who keep our city moving.”
During the visit, jeepney drivers candidly shared their concerns over rising fuel prices, maintenance costs, and the uncertain future of traditional jeepneys under the modernization program. Commuters also expressed their hopes for a more reliable and affordable public transport system.
Vergara responded with empathy and a clear policy stance, reaffirming her support for a just and inclusive modernization. Her platform includes downpayment assistance, loan guarantees, subsidies, and equity funding to help PUJ operators transition to eco-friendly vehicles without being displaced.
“Modernization must uplift—not uproot—our drivers,” she said. “We need policies that protect livelihoods while embracing progress.”
The activity concluded with lighthearted moments, photo opportunities, and a shared sense of optimism. More than just a campaign stop, it was a reflection of Vergara’s dedication to grassroots public service and her belief that real leadership begins with listening.
