Mayor Magalong’s Re-election: Is He Still Fit to Lead Baguio?

As Baguio City prepares for another round of elections, Mayor Benjie Magalong is once again in the spotlight. Known for his tough stance on governance and his military-style discipline, Magalong is gunning for re-election. But this time, things aren’t as smooth as before. The question on everyone’s mind: Is Magalong still fit to lead Baguio, or has his time passed?

Magalong's administration has achieved a lot—there’s no denying that. His push for a "Smart City" transformation, his transparency in governance, and his handling of the pandemic have been widely praised. He took a no-nonsense approach in dealing with challenges, making sure the city's infrastructure and security were given top priority. But with time, some cracks have begun to show.

Recently, Magalong has been hit with a corruption allegation, filed by none other than Mylen Yaranon, one of Baguio’s vice mayoral candidates. Yaranon claims that there were questionable deals under Magalong’s administration, particularly in the awarding of city projects. While these are still allegations and remain to be proven, it does raise some eyebrows. Mga tao tuloy nagtatanong, is this just dirty politics, or is there something more to it?

Magalong, however, has been quick to dismiss these claims. He insists that his administration has always been transparent, with no room for shady deals or corruption. "This is nothing but political mudslinging," he said in a recent interview. But, of course, the challenge for him is to clear his name—because the people of Baguio are watching closely. Will this issue hurt his chances in the election?

Well, it’s still anyone’s guess. The people of Baguio have come to expect strong leadership from Magalong, but these allegations could be a turning point. He’ll have to work hard to convince voters that he’s still the right man for the job and that these accusations are baseless. The mayor also needs to focus on addressing lingering issues like traffic, waste management, and public market concerns that haven’t been fully resolved.

But here’s the thing—if there's one thing Magalong has shown, it’s his resilience. His track record speaks for itself. Yes, the allegations may bring doubts, but his achievements are hard to ignore. In the end, Baguio needs a leader who’s tough and determined. Magalong still has the fight in him, and if he can clear his name and get back to what he does best, his re-election might just be another chapter in his legacy of service.
