Baguio parks eyed as outdoor museums, galleries

BAGUIO CITY (November 7, 2024)— The Baguio City government is putting up artworks by local artists in various parks and open spaces turning these into outdoor museums and galleries as it seeks to further bolster the Summer Capital’s reputation as a haven for artists and art lovers.

This is similar to the ‘Igobots’, four sculptures using recycled materials situated at the Post Office park and lower Session Road, City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) head Atty. Rhenan Diwas explained.

“The project is part of the city’s creative crawl where its parks are transformed from being not only open spaces and green areas but also serve as outdoor museums and galleries for local artists,” Diwas said.

The parks management chief also said that sculptures, mostly made of stone, can also be seen at the Baguio City Hall Park, Rizal Park and the Botanical Garden.

He said that the ‘Igobots’ specifically hopes to promote upcycling and recycling where non reusable materials can still be used in the creation of artworks especially in the hands of artists.

Diwas also invited artists to submit proposals for outdoor art installations at Sunshine Park, Wright Park, Mines View, Arboretum and other similar places in the city.

“Developments in these areas will include the art installations,” he added.

Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer
By Malou Laxamana Pascual May 5, 2025
As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
