Vergara to Seniors: 'Your Golden Years Deserve Dignity and Care'

BAGUIO CITY – The senior citizens of Barangay Asin Road weren’t just gathered for another routine assembly. On March 14, 2025, the barangay hall transformed into a hub of dialogue, hope, and promises of change—centered on those who spent their lives building the community.

Invited by Kagawad Erlinda Dulnuan, Baguio Tourism Council Chairman Gladys Vergara took the stage, joined by renowned fighter-turned-public servant Eric Kelly. But this wasn’t just a visit. It was an intimate conversation with the elderly, a sector often celebrated but rarely prioritized.

Senior Citizens President Romeo Bimuyag and Secretary Alex Catchero hosted the event, ensuring their voices were heard. And Vergara? She didn’t hold back.

“You have dedicated your lives to building strong families and communities. Now, it is our turn to ensure that your golden years are filled with dignity, care, and respect,”  she told the audience, “A society that values its elders is a society that thrives.”

Vergara laid out her plans: Universal Health Care, Social Pension, and a Senior Citizen Center in every barangay—policies aimed at making healthcare accessible, providing financial security, and creating safe spaces where seniors could engage, connect, and be cared for.

She wasn’t alone in pushing for these reforms. The event drew notable figures, including Barangay Captain Peter Dumapi, Kagawad Ramon Kindipan, Kagawad Jaime Candido, and Kalinga Partylist Representative Governor Roberto Pons Pascual. One by one, they voiced their support, acknowledging that taking care of the elderly is not just a policy decision—it’s a responsibility.

Beyond the speeches and pledges, the assembly was a reminder of something bigger: the fight for senior citizens' rights isn’t about handouts; it’s about recognition. It’s about ensuring that those who spent decades shaping the community aren’t left behind in its progress.

This gathering reaffirmed the collective commitment of everyone involved.—This is the future where every senior citizen in Baguio City can live with the dignity they deserve. With Gladys Vergara leading the charge the future is closer than ever.

Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer
By Malou Laxamana Pascual May 5, 2025
As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
