Irrigation systems rehab boost Ilocos Norte farming productivity

BAGUIO CITY (March 21, 2025) -- New and rehabilitated irrigation systems in eight (8) towns in Ilocos Norte providing thousands of farmers with improved access to water for their crops are seen to boost farming productivity in the province, the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte beamed.

Since 2024, the provincial government said, it has built and rehabilitated 526 units of small farm reservoirs, dredged over 31,000 meters of irrigation canals, and restored more than 15 hectares of farmlands. These efforts are benefiting 2,332 farmers from Pasuquin, Burgos, Bacarra, Pagudpud, Solsona, San Nicolas, Vintar, and the City of Batac.

Over the years, the provincial government claimed to continue propelling to advance levels Ilocos Norte agriculture through the provision of various farming inputs, machinery, and equipment and the establishment of agricultural infrastructures.

"We want to ensure that our farmers have reliable water sources, and these irrigation systems are part of our long-term vision to improve food security and rural livelihoods," said Gov. Matthew Marcos Manotoc.

"Farmers are the backbone of our province's agriculture sector, and we will continue to support them and provide any assistance that we can to sustain their livelihoods," he added.

Aside from the irrigation systems, the provincial government has also provided 36,710 liters of fuel, amounting to P 2,255,006.00, since 2023 to ensure that our farmers have enough source of water to maintain the quality of their production.

Through these ongoing initiatives, the provincial government seek to ensure that Ilokano farmers are equipped with sustainable resources, reinforcing its position as a nationwide leader in agricultural stability and innovation.

Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer

As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
