Women’s group wants misogynist bets DQed too

Women’s group GABRIELA, while welcoming COMELEC Task Force’s disqualification case against Misamis Oriental Governor Peter Unabia for his misogynist and demeaning remarks against nurses as well as versus Pasig bet Atty. Christian Sia, it said it wants all other bets face the same consequence for their disrespect and lewd remarks in their campaign sorties.

We maintain that such acts have no place in elections, let alone public office should they still win. This move is a crucial step toward holding electoral candidates and officials accountable for perpetuating sexism and misogyny, Gabriela said Tuesday.

The same measures must be taken against other candidates who have made similarly disrespectful and lewd remarks about women this election period, such as Mocha Uson with her lewd campaign jingle and Silang Mayoral candidate Atty. Alston Kevin Anarna who promised spouses to solo parents by raffling widows' names and pairing them up, the women’s group pressed the COMELEC.

Gabriela further said, hovernment leaders must uphold respect, dignity, and equality—not propagate toxic, patriarchal views that endanger women and diminish their immeasurable contributions to society.

The women’s group demands misogyny, discrimination, and any acts that degrade women and other marginalized sectors be made official grounds for disqualification from public office.

“Filipino women, who make up more than half of the electorate, deserve no less from COMELEC. We reiterate our appeal to fellow voters: let our voices serve the marginalized and oppressed sectors of women, children, and LGBTQIA+”, it pointed out.

Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer
By Malou Laxamana Pascual May 5, 2025
As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
