Vergara Pushes for Baguio’s Tourism Boom: ‘A Stronger Industry Means a Stronger Economy’

BAGUIO CITY—For congressional candidate Gladys Vergara, tourism isn’t just about drawing visitors—it’s about building livelihoods, boosting local businesses, and strengthening the city’s economy from the ground up. Speaking at the General Assembly Day in Pinsao Proper Barangay, at the invitation of Punong Barangay Raymund Laxamana, Vergara laid out her vision for an elevated tourism industry.

Hospitality, transportation, events, and local enterprises—all crucial sectors that, when fortified, could transform Baguio into an even more competitive and sustainable destination. She pointed to Pinsao Proper’s untapped potential, with the Stone Kingdom rapidly emerging as a must-visit attraction. “Tourism isn’t just about what we have—it’s about what we can create,” she told an engaged audience. “With the right infrastructure, strategic planning, and sustainable practices, we can ensure that growth benefits not just tourists, but the people who call this city home.”

As the chair of the Baguio Tourism Council, Gladys Vergara’s blueprint for progress extends beyond aesthetics. She envisions a tourism industry that empowers local communities, turning cultural heritage and natural beauty into engines of economic prosperity.

Residents at the assembly welcomed her proposals, recognizing that well-planned tourism means more jobs, stronger businesses, and a thriving local economy.

More than just promises, Gladys Vergara assured the crowd that she’s ready to work with local leaders, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders to implement policies that make Baguio’s tourism sector not just bigger, but better.

A thriving tourism industry isn’t just a boost for business—it’s a boost for every Baguio resident,” she said. “Let’s build a city that isn’t just visited, but truly experienced.”

Empowering the People Through Tourism

  • Job Creation – Strengthening tourism-related industries (hospitality, transportation, events, and local enterprises) will generate more employment opportunities for residents.

  • Boosting Local Businesses – A well-developed tourism sector ensures that small businesses, artisans, and entrepreneurs benefit from increased visitor spending.

  • Infrastructure Development – Strategic improvements in roads, facilities, and public spaces will make tourism sustainable while enhancing the daily lives of locals.

  • Sustainable Tourism Practices – Policies will focus on preserving Baguio’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, ensuring long-term benefits for future generations.

  • Community Empowerment – Encouraging local involvement in tourism-related projects will provide new income streams and skills training for residents.

  • Increased Economic Resilience – A thriving tourism sector will create a stable economic foundation, reducing dependence on seasonal industries and external markets.

  • Collaboration with Stakeholders – Working closely with local leaders, businesses, and policymakers to implement policies that ensure growth is inclusive and beneficial to all.
Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer
By Malou Laxamana Pascual May 5, 2025
As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
