Saint Louis University, CICM-controlled schools suspends classes on 39th EDSA anniversary

BAGUIO CITY (February 19, 2025) -- The sectarian-led Saint Louis University (SLU) and other schools under the Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae - Philippines Schools Network (CICM-PSN) is suspending classes on all levels on February 25, 2025, in observance of the 39th year anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

The CICM-PSN, which includes Maryhill School of Theology, Saint Louis College-Cebu, Saint Louis College-San Fernando City, Saint Mary’s University, and the University of Saint Louis, declared it has long upheld its mission of fostering justice and peace within its academic communities.

“This is not just about honoring those who sacrificed during those events,” the CICM-PSN stated in its advisory. “It is about ensuring that our students understand history so they know where we truly stand today.”

By suspending classes, CICM-PSN aims to instill in today’s learners a deeper recognition of this milestone and its lasting impact on the country’s political and social landscape, it further explained.

“With this declaration, the network reaffirms its commitment to historical awareness, critical thinking, and active civic engagement. Students and faculty are encouraged to reflect on the lessons of People Power and recognize their responsibility in safeguarding democracy,” its advisory stressed, reiterating, “because history is not just something to be remembered, it is something to be understood, lived, and defended.

Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer

As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
