Religious leaders meet with Gladys Vergara.

BAGUIO CITY – Gladys Vergara formally announced her candidacy as the congressional representative of Baguio City, presenting her programs and advocacies aimed at improving living standards, peace, and economic growth during a meeting with religious leaders on January 16.

Gladys also vowed before the religious groups to continue the legacy of her father, former Congressman and Mayor Bernie M. Vergara, known as the “Action Man,” who demonstrated exceptional dedication to public service and infrastructure development during his tenure.

Among her proposals was the distribution of solar lights to barangays in need to illuminate streets for the benefit of residents at night and to deter criminal activities.

She emphasized the importance of ensuring citizens’ safety in their communities. “It’s difficult and frightening to walk in dark areas where danger looms, so we must be concerned about such issues,” she said.

Gladys also distributed her father’s book titled One for the Road, which highlights the programs and projects accomplished during his time as the “Father and Representative” of Baguio City.

Currently, Gladys serves as the chairperson of the Baguio Tourism Council, where she has made significant contributions to the growth of tourism and major activities in Baguio City. Under her leadership, the council intensified efforts to promote the city’s unique beauty, cultural heritage, and natural wonders, attracting both local and international visitors.

Her campaign slogan, “Glad to Serve,” symbolizes her God-centered, honest, and prosperous service to the government and the people of Baguio City.

Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer

As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
