Race for Congress Heats Up: Two Women Lead the Charge, While a Veteran Politician Eyes a Comeback

The upcoming congressional race has become even more exciting with two women vying for the position, while another seasoned personality is making a comeback.
Let us first spotlight Gladys Vergara, daughter of the esteemed former mayor and congressman, Bernie Vergara. Bernie, fondly known as the “Action Man,” left an indelible mark on Baguio City with his transformative projects. These include pedestrian overpasses, open basketball courts across various villages, the flyover connecting Baguio to La Trinidad, and the rehabilitation of City Camp Lagoon, among others. Gladys has pledged to continue her father’s legacy, emphasizing tangible and impactful projects that the public can see, touch, and experience.
What many might not know is that Gladys has been serving Baguio City even before her father. She was elected KB Federation President of Baguio after serving as KB Chair of QM Barangay. Additionally, she has held key positions in local government, including City Councilor and Vice Mayor.
Among the top three contenders for the congressional seat, Gladys stands out as a seasoned public servant with the competence and experience to excel in legislative functions. Her dynamic leadership style, coupled with her energy and stamina, positions her as a strong and capable candidate ready to take on the demands of the role.
Another prominent contender in the congressional race is Soledad “Sol” Go, wife of incumbent Congressman Mark Go, who is completing his final term as the representative of Baguio City’s lone district. With Mark Go now running for the mayoralty post against incumbent Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Sol has stepped forward to vie for the congressional seat her husband is vacating.
Described by Congressman Mark Go as “the best wife,” Sol Go’s candidacy has sparked discussions about whether personal accolades translate into legislative effectiveness. While some supporters praise her potential, others question if her qualifications and experience are sufficient for the demands of the role.
Critics have also noted that Sol appears to have started her “campaigning” well in advance through community engagement, particularly targeting grassroots groups and senior citizens with dole-out initiatives. While these efforts may bolster her visibility, they have also sparked debate about their long-term impact and alignment with sustainable governance.
As the race intensifies, voters are left to weigh Sol Go’s promises and actions, determining whether her bid for Congress is grounded in genuine public service or simply a continuation of her husband’s political legacy.
Given Congressman Mark Go’s established position and significant advantage in terms of logistics and political machinery, questions have been raised regarding the source of campaign funds for both Mark and Sol Go. The “ayuda” system, which has reportedly been implemented at the grassroots level, has fueled speculation and skepticism among the public.
Many recipients of these financial aids and support initiatives are left with the impression that these funds come directly from the Go family’s personal resources. However, critics and observers are questioning the legitimacy of these claims and whether such actions adhere to ethical and legal standards in campaign financing.
The situation underscores a broader concern about the transparency and accountability of political campaigns, particularly when the lines between personal wealth and public resources appear blurred. As voters evaluate their choices, these issues will likely play a critical role in shaping public perception and, ultimately, the outcome of the race.
The third leading contender in the congressional race is former mayor and congressman Atty. Mauricio “Morris” Domogan, a veteran public servant who played a pivotal role in Baguio’s development alongside the “Action Man,” Bernie Vergara. Domogan’s long-standing partnership with Vergara contributed to the successful implementation of various landmark projects that shaped the city’s progress.
However, time seems to have caught up with Domogan. Following his first political loss in 2019, when he was defeated by Mark Go in his bid for a fresh congressional term, Domogan faced another setback in 2022 when he ran for mayor and lost to the incumbent, Benjamin Magalong. These defeats, coupled with his advanced age, have led many to suggest that Domogan may now deserve a well-earned retirement from politics after decades of service.
The facts highlight a growing sentiment among voters: the need for leaders who possess not only the experience but also the passion, stamina, and energy to serve effectively. The public increasingly values sincerity and compassion over dynastic ambitions or a desire to perpetuate political partnerships. As the race unfolds, the electorate must weigh these qualities carefully in choosing a representative who can genuinely advance the city’s interests and meet its evolving needs.
