Mayor Magalong Denounces Perceived AKAP Anomalies

Mayor Benjamin Magalong recently denounced the existence of anomalies in the implementation of AKAP at the local government level. In a pointed statement, Magalong criticized legislators for giving the impression that the ayuda payouts come from their personal coffers.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian also acted to shield AKAP from political interference. He banned candidates in the forthcoming local elections from visiting payout sites, underscoring the need to maintain the program’s integrity during the election season.

Meanwhile, it can be recalled that DSWD-CAR Regional Director Maria C. Aplaten emphasized that AKAP applicants must proceed directly to their office to avail of the program. She reiterated that endorsements from politicians are not necessary to access assistance.

Director Aplaten’s stance shines a light on the difference between public service and political posturing. Instead of relying on political endorsements or catering to public figures’ whims, she is steering AKAP toward a true service model—no frills, just clear-cut support where it is most needed. It is a straightforward vision, one that urges politicians to leave their personal interests at the door and prioritize actual community welfare.

Aplaten’s statements, supported by Mayor Magalong’s observations and Secretary Gatchalian’s decisive action, dismiss any attempts to politicize AKAP. Their actions show that an effective, unbiased approach to social welfare is possible. By keeping the doors open to direct applications, clarifying the cross-checking process, and ensuring that political endorsements hold no sway, DSWD-CAR is maintaining its commitment to a people-first approach

Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer
By Malou Laxamana Pascual May 5, 2025
As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
