La Union, First Province in Ilocos Region to Achieve 100% Sanitary Landfill Coverage

The Province of La Union remains committed in its goal towards effective waste management as it becomes the only province in Ilocos Region with 100% Sanitary Landfill Facility coverage per component Local Government Unit (LGU), marking a significant milestone in its environmental sustainability.

This milestone was realized through the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) under the leadership of Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David, who inaugurated the last four Sanitary Landfills in the municipalities of Burgos, Bauang, Sudipen, and Bagulin in the last quarter of 2024.

The inauguration of these facilities is mandated by Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

Gov. Rafy highlighted the vital role of these facilities in safeguarding the environment and supporting the province’s vision of becoming the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon. She called on all kaPROBINSYAnihan to ensure the proper maintenance of these facilities, stating, “Mahalaga ang magiging papel ng proyektong ito sa pagkamit ng ating vision na maging Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon kasabay ng ating kampanya para sa #KalikasanNaman.

"I ask for everyone’s cooperation in properly maintaining these facilities so that they can serve us for a long time.” she added.

The projects, an embodiment of La Union PROBINSYAnihan or a result of cooperation between PGLU and the respective LGUs, includes not just the establishment of new Sanitary Landfills in Bagulin and Burgos but also the upgrading of existing facilities in Bauang and Sudipen. These will not only provide an essential solution to managing the province's solid waste but also serve as a testament to La Union's dedication to environmental sustainability and inclusive governance.

By ensuring that every component LGU has access to a fully functional Sanitary Landfill, La Union sets a benchmark in solid waste management for other provinces in the Ilocos Region and beyond.

With its advocacy on the environment at the forefront, the province continues to inspire collective action and environmental stewardship, ensuring that future generations will inherit a province that thrives in harmony with nature.

Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer
By Malou Laxamana Pascual May 5, 2025
As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
