‘Jail never impeded love for Baguio love birds’

BAGUIO CITY (February 14, 2025) --  Four lovebirds once again prove that love cannot be imprisoned when they tied the knot on Valentines Day inside the Baguio City Jail.

Their fellow Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) witnessing their moment including their families, sponsors, selected guests, members of the media and officiating officer --Baguio City Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong. Couples married today are not completely strangers, jail officers said.

They have known each other “outside”.  Two of the couples even have children and decided to marry while inside the jail. Magalong encouraged the newly weds that with their love for each other and their family especially their children, there is hope and life outside the bars.   Himself as a former detainee for rebellion in 2006, he admitted that ‘the strongest weapon to beat boredom and any challenges especially those who are deprived of freedom is the bond that was formed by love’.

After the couples slip each their wedding rings, they exchanged vows and words of hope with most of them teary eyed.   They promised to rebuild their lives and wait for each other hoping they will gain liberty, soon.

Just as Magalong officially announced them as husbands-wives,  the Baguio City Jail was filled with cheers for the lovebirds. Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Cordillera Regional chief Imelda Buyuccan, also one of the wedding sponsors said, the newly weds could now be Mr. and Mrs.

Baguio Civil Registrar Allan Abayao also a wedding sponsor, assured the couples they will assist them in the processing of necessary wedding registration papers and procedures to legitimized their children.

Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
