Gladys Vergara Vows to Continue Her Father’s Legacy

Gladys Vergara, the daughter of former Baguio City Mayor and Representative Bernie M. Vergara, has committed to continuing her father’s legacy if given a seat in the House of Representatives. Congressman Vergara, widely known as the “Action Man,” earned a reputation for his dedication to public service and infrastructure development during his tenure.

Among his notable achievements are the construction of the flyover connecting Baguio City and La Trinidad, as well as the flyover at the BGH Rotunda, and the establishment of pedestrian overpasses linking the city’s major landmarks. One of his most ambitious projects, the circumferential road designed to improve mobility and reduce traffic congestion in the central business district by dispersing traffic flow to the neighboring BLISST area.

Gladys Vergara has expressed her determination to resume and complete these initiatives, ensuring that her father’s vision for the city becomes a reality. She emphasizes the importance of transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, asserting that constituents have the right to know how legislative allocations are spent. Gladys firmly believes that these funds should be directed toward tangible and measurable projects that significantly benefit the community.

With her commitment to upholding her father’s principles and continuing his impactful programs, Gladys seeks to gain the trust and support of the people in her bid for public office.

Gladys Vergara, currently serving as the Chair of the Baguio Tourism Council, has played a pivotal role in solidifying Baguio’s reputation as the premier tourist destination in Northern Luzon. Under her leadership, the council has intensified efforts to promote the city’s unique charm, cultural heritage, and natural beauty, drawing both local and international visitors.

Tourism runs deep in Gladys' family roots. Her father, Bernie M. Vergara, served as General Manager of the Philippine Tourism Authority before transitioning to a successful political career as Mayor and Representative of Baguio’s lone district. This background underscores their shared passion for elevating Baguio as a key tourism hub.

Through her initiatives, Gladys Vergara aims to build on her father’s legacy while introducing innovative strategies to make Baguio a sustainable and globally competitive destination. Her commitment to tourism highlights her dedication to fostering economic growth and preserving the city’s rich cultural identity for future generations.

Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer
By Malou Laxamana Pascual May 5, 2025
As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
