From Tradition to Transformation — The Leadership Shift We Need

Filipinos often vote not solely based on conscience but are influenced by factors like name recall, allowing the same politicians to resurface election after election. Despite their advanced age, many of these figures stubbornly cling to power, whether at the national or local level. This endless cycle of political comebacks strengthens dynasties, stifles fresh leadership, and ultimately hinders the nation’s progress, trapping the political landscape in a state of stagnation.

On the other hand, the country urgently needs a younger, more capable generation of leaders to replace overstaying politicians who have turned their repeated comebacks into a retirement plan—or worse, a lifelong career of political privilege. These entrenched figures cling to power, treating public office as a personal entitlement rather than a duty to serve. Without fresh leadership, the cycle of self-serving governance will persist, depriving the nation of the energy, innovation, and integrity needed for true progress.

In Baguio alone, a new generation of dynamic, innovative, and compassionate leaders is emerging—individuals with the vision and capability to drive real progress. Young blood, exemplified by promising figures like Paolo Salvosa, Van Dicang, Pam Cariño, Glenn Gaerlan, Yuri Weygan, Eric Kelly, and Ron Perez—whose outstanding performance is now reflected in recent surveys—represents the fresh leadership the city urgently needs. Meanwhile, Gladys Vergara, a staunch advocate for tourism, continues to gain ground, further strengthening the call for change. These individuals stand as the best alternatives to entrenched politicians who have long treated public office as their personal domain. Now is the time to break free from stagnation and usher in leaders who prioritize genuine public service over political survival.

Traditional politics is never a way forward for Baguio—true progress comes from fostering inclusive, solutions-driven leadership that puts the city’s future first. We urgently need a new generation of leaders—driven, innovative, and unburdened by the failures of the past. These are individuals brimming with fresh ideas, fueled by the energy and determination that only youth can offer. Alongside them, a dynamic team of young yet highly capable individuals deserves a place in the city council—leaders not only with the competence but the bold vision to propel Baguio forward. The time for change is now. We must break free from stagnation and entrust the future to those who will lead with purpose, integrity, and a genuine commitment to serve.

Time to Pass the Torch: Why Political Comebacks Are Not the Answer
By Malou Laxamana Pascual May 5, 2025
As the May 12 election nears, a quiet but growing movement is making itself heard in Baguio City. It does not come from the traditional campaign stage or the usual political dynasties. It is not funded by machinery or driven by name recall. It comes from the ground, from the young, and from those who are tired of the cycle. Tired of the same names, the same faces, the same families. Tired of watching opportunity slip away as public service is reduced to a personal brand.
