Baguio’s third-termer lawmaker’s businesswoman-wife seeks his post
BAGUIO CITY (October 3, 2024) -- As expected many years ago, businesswoman Soledad "Sol" Go, wife of third-termer Baguio lawmaker Marquez Go, has thrown her hat to seek her husband’s post in the House of Representatives.
A well-known and established advocate for livelihood and education in the city, Go officially filed her Certificate of Candidacy (COC) Thursday morning together with Rep. Go, her fellow candidates, community leaders and a sizeable number of supporters along with supporters of her Team Maka-Baguio Tayo.
Third to lodge their bid in a supposed 7-cornered fight for the lone seat to represent Baguio City in the Halls of the Lower House, Go, according to her supporters, has irrefutably been with the people and communities of Baguio for almost a decade now. She has meaningfully and effectively collaborated with them on livelihood, education, and barangay initiatives, along with her husband’s initiatives in the legislature.
She pledged to continue the brand of speedy, competent, compassionate, and clean service of her husband along with an ultimate invitation to her fellow slatemates, Baguio communities, and even those currently serving to be “Maka-Baguio”.
Halina’t maging Maka-Baguio tayo!” the congressional bet said.
The congressional candidate could be the first in Baguio’s history of a spouse “inheriting” a position, such that never before in this highland’s city’s election annals that a spouse bids his spouse’s position after their terms.
“Baguio’s first”
Yet another history in the making too by Go’s family emerges when in the coming days, Rep. Go separately files his bid in the mayoral race, making it Baguio’s first for the husband-wife tandem for any electoral exercise here.
Such talk about the husband-wife tandem came about when the supposed bid for Rep. Go to head the Technical Skills Development Authority (TESDA) was foiled when Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed a new chief in that agency over a month ago.
Rep. Go however has remained mum on bidding for the mayoral race against incumbent city mayor Benjamin Magalong, while local electoral and political analysts predict, a husband-wife tandem would negatively cause the Go family’s downfall as Baguio’s electorate seemed is not bent on such a political arrangement.
Sol Go’s formal filing Thursday was joined by her “Team Maka-Baguio Tayo,” slate which includes incumbent city councilor Atty. Betty Lourdes “Lulu” Tabanda, former city councilor Elaine Sembrano, former city councilor Joel Alangsab, media leader Edong Carta, and incumbent barangay Abanao-Zandueta-Kayong-Chugumotek (AZKCO) kagawad Atty. Standford Ang. No announcement was made who will finally take the mayoral and vice-mayoral bids under their slate.
